There are two little islands posted off the tip of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park in Maine. On our recent glamping trip we stepped back in time and spent a day ferrying with our bicycles between Great Cranberry and Little Cranberry (Islesford Island). It was pure magic and invokes memories of Anne of Green Gables and Prince Edward Island.
Catch the ferry from either Southwest Harbor or Northeast Harbor and make a day of it.
You can either pack a picnic or stop at a cafe. We journeyed to Little Cranberry first and cycled to a little pebble beach where had a picnic and enjoyed beachcombing for memory stones.
Our second stop was Great Cranberry Island, home to Hitty’s Cafe, a little cycle stop cafe that offers amazing lobster rolls, ice-tea, ice-cream and a selection of sandwiches. After cycling the length of the island we stopped at Hitty’s for ice-tea and soda.
The ferry’s come every two hours in the summer time, which for us was plenty of time to explore. Having left Southwest Harbor at 11 a.m. and arrived back by 5 p.m. The ferry’s take about 30 – 40 mins, with a shorter jaunt between the two islands.
Happy Glamping!
