We found a fabulous barbecue hut on Mount Desert Island that’s nestled down a little lane off Crooked Road.
If you didn’t know better you would think you were pulling into someone’s driveway and not Mainely Meats, what we think is one of the best down east brew houses and grill restaurants outside Bar Harbor.
This is the kind of hidden gem places that we love to find. It felt like entering a spread in Bon Appetit magazine where long, ‘find your own’ tables were scattered under a huge white tent strung with colourful lights. There was a fine balance of tourists and campers spread amongst local summer vacationers who come to the island for the months of July and August.
The girls sipped home-brewed blueberry sodas while we sampled the house special ale, dark as Guinness but full-bodied and easy drinking. It was exactly what we needed after a two day haul from Nova Scotia to Maine with two set-ups and tear-downs in our new pop-up ‘Tilly’. We were tired, hungry and thirsty.
One side of the menu was filled with the brew house ales including blueberry ale, ginger beer and a mixture of European-style and east coast beers.
The other side was filled with meat: pulled pork, ribs and homemade sausages. The ribs were cooked with a special dry rub and were fall-off-the-bone delish. I tucked into a basket of smokey wings with a side of the spiciest, deep-flavored beans, quality potato salad, with a fine-addition of chopped pickle and slaw.
If you’re visiting the area of Acadia National Park and you’re feeling the need for some lovingly cooked grilled meat, it’s worth seeking out this local restaurant. Slow food, easy-going atmosphere and a plate to sink your teeth into.
